The Science Journals Experiment

An Interactive Data Visualization

The Science Journals Experiment aims to showcase academic research in the natural sciences through interactive data visualization.

The user acts like a researcher in a lab and investigates the emergence of and the number of documents in each natural sciences subject area (specifically wet lab focus). The emergence of each subject area is represented by the sequence of interactions, where the user investigates each subject area and makes a discovery. The data is approximately visualized where 1 element in the subject area (ex. 1 pill) = 5000 documents.

Ultimately, I want the user to 1) experience and appreciate the journey of progress in the natural sciences and 2) identify patterns between subject areas.

I drew on my Neuroscience background to inspire this data visualization on this subset of academic journals. I made queries to and worked with the original dataset from Journal Ranking Dataset, found on Kaggle to produce the dataset for this project.
